American Block - Testing & Commissioning Engineer

MAJOR FUNCTION:
American Block, a world leader in the manufacturing of various oil field drilling equipment, has an immediate opening for an Installation & Commissioning Engineer on a direct hire opportunity in Houston, Texas. The Installation & Commissioning Engineer will be assigned to installation and commissioning projects on site at customer locations. Projects will vary in length. Project sites will be located all over the world and will require frequent travel.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
  • Oversee Installation & Commissioning of new systems within the schedule and budget.
  • Responsible for assessment, testing and commissioning of various equipment.
  • Provides leadership of project staff on location.
  • Training of customers and staff through both classroom settings and hands on practical applications.
  • Deliver superior customer service and support of both new and old projects.
  • Act as resident engineer on projects of any magnitude.
  • Interpret complex plan and specs applying all available information to ensure that all project design requirements have ben satisfied.
  • Plan, perform, and document the commissioning of various equipment and itsĀ corresponding control systems and power circuits to ensure that the intended operation and safety of the equipment and personnel are satisfied.
  • Write commissioning and installation procedures for various capital equipment.
  • Maintain familiarity with appropriate hazard zone codes to ensure proper equipment compliance.
  • Take a lead role in resolving manufacturing issues, procedures and methods through working with other engineering personnel, inspectors, contractors, and third party suppliers.
  • Institute and direct documentation changes on the work being done, when required by site conditions.
  • Prepare and institute programs for testing equipment, materials, and start-up of systems.
  • Review and approve detailed test reports of various types of equipment.
  • Promote efficient flow of information and ensure complete and proper record keeping of commissioned equipment.
  • Maintain familiarity with Company drawing system, design, and standards as well as applicable industry codes and practices.
  • Prepare, review, and comment on Owners Manuals and start-up procedures.
  • Prepare and review PLC programming logic.
  • Develop process excellence techniques to identify systematic issues.
  • Verify that the equipment and systems are mechanically complete.
  • Lead in troubleshooting and resolving equipment, systems, and process problems to prevent the occurrence of product and process noncomformities.
  • Prevent hazardous conditions for personnel and equipment.
  • Plan, execute, and supervise the commissioning to the final handover / acceptance of equipment.
  • Enable the safe and efficient handover from assembly completion to testing / commissioning through product operation on a pass / fail basis.
  • Review and define the scope of the commissioning, planning, man-hour requirements and personnel required to complete the scope of the work.
  • Review various performance measurements to calculated targets, and provide remedial action as necessary.
  • Monitor and execute outstanding punch list items.
  • Oversee and develop a team of technicians.
  • Develop programs / procedures that will improve efficiency, product performance, and equipment reliability.
  • Propose implementations to improve production methods, equipment performance, and product quality and field-friendly use.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • 2-5 years of direct hands-on experience as a Field Service Engineer or Technician.
  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Effective communication skills both verbal and written, with superiors, colleagues, and individuals in and outside of the company in a variety of settings.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Experience with equipment qualifications, factory acceptance testing, and commissioning.
  • Ability to work in harsh and inclement conditions.
  • Experienced in overseas work
  • Equally comfortable in the field or at a computer.
  • Flexibililty in traveling up to 75% of the physical year.
  • WIlling to work flexible hours, weekends, holidays and nights
  • U.S. Citizenship or U.S. permanent resident status.
  • Valid Driver's License issued by state of residence and in good standing.

Candidate should possess:

  • A broad understanding of instrumentation technology.
  • Effective leadership skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in root cause analysis
  • Proficiency with Hydraulics and Control Systems.
  • Experience with PLCs and HMIs.
  • The ability to read electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical schematics / drawings.
  • Knowledge of various Hydraulic systems
  • Knowledge of various electrical systems, both AC and DC.
  • Knowledge of Mechanical systems as a whole.
  • Knowledge of VAriable Frequency Drives.
  • Experience in installing large machinery.
  • Knowledge of global hazard zone codes and requirements.
  • Proficiency with CAD software. AutoCAD and Inventor preferred.
  • Proficiency with PC skills in Adobe, MS Word, and MS Excel.
  • Proficiency with a multi-meter.
  • Advanced technical writing skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical reports.
